Requirements

Must:
- A bachelors degree is required. - Preferred: Masters or PhD in Anthropology, Archaeology, History, Museum Studies, Sociology, or a related field. - Desirable: Three or more years of experience working with archival, museum, archaeological, or similar collections. - Strongly preferred: Familiarity with NAGPRA processes and federal regulations (43 CFR 10). - Preferred: Knowledge of Indigenous material culture, archaeology, and artifact typologies. - Experience collaborating with Tribal Nations and Indigenous communities is advantageous. - Strong organizational, analytical, and writing skills are essential. - Experience or training in archival practices, including the organization of records, both paper and digital. Digitization skills and working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite are required. - Ability to work effectively in diverse environments, including archives, museum collections, and field settings. - Valid drivers license and capability for occasional travel.

Responsibilities

- Conduct thorough identification and assessment of Indigenous material culture, placing objects in the correct cultural, geographic, and chronological contexts through rigorous analysis. - Collaborate with an external NAGPRA consulting group to create compliance documentation and prepare federally compliant inventories, summaries, and notifications. - Build and maintain respectful, ongoing relationships with Tribal Nations through regular consultation and collaboration during all NAGPRA-related processes. - Manage logistics for consultation visits, ensuring efficient scheduling, thorough documentation, and access to collections. - Create and uphold accurate documentation related to NAGPRA research, inventories, and consultation records in line with federal and institutional standards. - Contribute to the establishment of duty-of-care standards for the collection in partnership with Tribal representatives and NAGPRA consultants from the University. - Work in tandem with institutional stakeholders to ensure consistent and compliant practices across various departments including the University Collections of Art and History, Special Collections and Archives, and General Counsel. - Engage in educational initiatives and public programming to enhance awareness of NAGPRA, Indigenous heritage, and ethical stewardship practices. - Potentially assist in forming a NAGPRA review committee and in preparing federal grant applications related to repatriation efforts. - Perform additional tasks as assigned.

We are seeking a NAGPRA Collections Researcher to conduct research, documentation, and analysis of Indigenous material culture within Washington and Lee Universitys collections. This role will play a key part in the responsible management of these materials and in advancing the Universitys compliance with the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA). This full-time, fixed-term position offers benefits and has an appointment term of one year, with the possibility of renewal based on performance and programmatic needs.
