Requirements
Must:
- A Ph.D. or equivalent in environmental health and safety, environmental science, public health, emergency management, public policy, public administration, economics, or a closely related discipline is required upon appointment.
- Candidates who have not yet completed a Ph.D. must be within 12 months of finishing their degree to be eligible for consideration.
- Proven expertise in disaster preparedness and resilience at local, regional, state, or national levels.
- Significant experience in areas relating to disaster preparedness and resilience, particularly concerning agriculture, food systems, and community health.
- Exceptional written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, with the capability to effectively convey information to non-scientific and public audiences.
- Demonstrated research productivity, evidenced by publications in peer-reviewed journals.
- Established history of engaging effectively with a diverse array of stakeholders.
- Experience in leading collaborative research teams is essential.
- Availability for flexible travel as necessary, along with proof of vehicle liability and property damage insurance.
- Possession of or ability to obtain a valid California Drivers License for use of university vehicles is required.
- All applicants must have unrestricted and permanent work authorization in the U.S. without the need for visa sponsorship.
- Finalist will be required to disclose any final administrative or judicial decisions regarding misconduct within the past seven years, if applicable.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the Director of the UC ANR Disaster Preparedness and Resilience Institute, dedicating approximately 0.3 FTE.
- Collaborate closely with UC ANRs network of advisors, specialists, faculty, and external stakeholders to conduct applied research and share findings.
- Design and implement research initiatives focused on disaster preparedness and resilience, covering areas such as zoonotic agrosecurity, climate resiliency, and mental health in disaster responses.
- Lead efforts to translate research findings into practical solutions that enhance community resilience and disaster readiness.
- Develop a comprehensive extension education program that includes statewide trainings, workshops, educational resources, and a dedicated website to support improvements in disaster preparedness among communities and agencies.
- Seek funding for research and extension initiatives from federal and state entities and other sources.
- Publish research outcomes, best practices, and case studies in accessible formats to maximize reach and impact.
- Engage in professional society activities, contributing scholarly work to achieve recognition at state, national, and international levels.

This role is pivotal within the newly established Disaster Preparedness and Resilience Institute (DPRI), aimed at addressing Californias pressing challenges related to disaster readiness.
