Requirements

Must:
- Bachelors degree in Computer Science or a related field, or comparable hands-on experience - Over 7 years of experience in software engineering with a core focus on backend or full-stack development, demonstrating capability at a principal or staff engineer level - Extensive knowledge in designing and developing serverless architectures on AWS, including: - Lambda for computing tasks - API Gateway for exposing services (both REST and HTTP APIs) - DynamoDB or Aurora Serverless for data storage - Step Functions or other workflow orchestration tools - EventBridge, SQS, or SNS for asynchronous communication - S3 for object storage and data lake solutions - CloudFront for enhancing API performance and edge caching - Proficient in TypeScript and/or Python for backend applications, ensuring high production-quality code - Proven experience in designing and maintaining RESTful and GraphQL APIs, including contract design, versioning, error management, and using type-safe tools (e.g., OpenAPI, GraphQL Code Generator, tRPC) - Solid grasp of Infrastructure as Code techniques with AWS CDK, CloudFormation, or Terraform - Familiarity with observability tools like CloudWatch, X-Ray, or Datadog, and expertise in tracing distributed requests and addressing incidents - Strong understanding of security best practices, including IAM policies and managing access controls - Experienced in debugging complex issues within distributed systems using network traces, logging, and profiling - Background in comprehensive testing methods across all levels, including unit, integration, and load testing - Familiarity with containerized environments such as ECS Fargate or Docker - Excellent written and verbal communication skills, capable of articulating complex decisions clearly to non-technical audiences

Responsibilities

- Act as the technical leader for backend and platform architecture within one or more product areas, making significant decisions on development patterns, tools, and standards - Design, build, and oversee full-stack features, including APIs and serverless architectures, alongside the necessary data models and event-driven workflows - Spearhead technical design evaluations, architectural discussions, and RFC processes to ensure synchronization across engineering teams - Detect and address systemic problems such as performance hindrances, reliability issues, scaling barriers, and technical debt that impede progress - Manage intricate debugging tasks across the entire stack, handling API latency, infrastructure issues, and failures in distributed systems - Define and advocate for engineering best practices relating to code quality, testing methodologies, observability, and deployment security - Collaborate with Engineering Managers, Product teams, and Front-End Engineers to align on project roadmaps and ensure technical feasibility - Provide mentorship to engineers at all expertise levels through code evaluations, pairing sessions, design reviews, and technical advice - Assist in the recruitment process by conducting technical interviews and defining the benchmarks for backend engineering excellence at TFS - Effectively communicate technical risks, trade-offs, and recommendations to both engineers and non-technical team members
