Lead Software Engineer, AI
$137,100 - 293,000
Thomson Reuters
10th Street NW 2121, Washington
$137,100 - 293,000
Requirements
Must:
- 5+ years in applied ML/AI or 5+ years with an advanced degree, delivering production systems in document AI/OCR/NLP or information extraction at scale.
- Strong expertise in Python and deep learning (PyTorch/TensorFlow), with knowledge in LLMs, embeddings/vector search, prompt design/evaluation, and statistical methods for quality and uncertainty.
- Experience with cloud-native ML operations: training/inference pipelines, feature/data storage, observability, cost/performance optimization.
- Ability to manage the end-to-end lifecycle for AI features: design, implementation, testing, deployment, monitoring, and iteration.
- Proficiency in optimizing model/workflow inference for latency, throughput, and cost, including strategies for caching, batching, and model selection.
- Experience in implementing monitoring, logging, tracing, and alerting for workflows and models in production to track data drift, model performance, and error rates.
- Proven ability to debug and troubleshoot complex AI systems in production, including prompt failures, integration bugs, and data quality issues.
- Capability to collaborate with Product, Tax Subject Matter Experts, and other engineering teams to translate business and tax requirements into AI workflows.
- Experience working alongside data scientists and ML engineers on model selection, evaluation, and experimentation within pipelines.
- Demonstrated leadership in conducting design and code reviews while mentoring mid-level/junior engineers on AI best practices and production-level coding.
- Contribution to internal standards and best practices for developing AI workflows with a focus on effective documentation and templates.
- Experience in creating end-to-end AI features that are deployed in production environments, not merely prototypes.
- Ability to convert vague tax/business requirements into clear, testable workflow designs.
- Commitment to robustness and accuracy, especially in areas where mistakes can have significant financial or compliance implications.
- Willingness to engage with tax/business regulations and collaborate with domain experts, even without prior tax specialization.
Responsibilities
- Develop document intelligence by creating generalizable models for tax documents (both standard and non-standard) using CV/NLP/LLMs and embeddings to surpass fixed OCR templates through dynamic, context-aware parsing.
- Enhance auto-verification and quality: improve matching of native PDFs/text layers, anomaly detection, and checks informed by prior years to identify issues preemptively; design workflows that maintain practitioner control through human involvement.
- Scale and optimize the pipeline: establish low-latency training/inference pipelines handling millions of documents, ensuring robust observability, evaluation, and monitoring for drift.
- Integrate LLMs and traditional ML models into streamlined, auditable workflows supporting tax determination, document processing, and rules-based automation.
- Construct and sustain data pipelines, and manage feature extraction and preprocessing for tax-relevant data, such as invoices and filings.
- Design and implement RESTful APIs and microservices to provide AI functionalities to both internal and external systems.
- Ensure all solutions comply with security, auditability, and regulatory standards typical within tax and other regulated fields.
- Collaborate with various engineering teams and leverage our AI platforms to produce reliable, auditable AI in a production setting across Thomson Reuters.
