Requirements
Must:
We require candidates to possess a Master's degree; alternatively, a Bachelor's degree with two (2) years of software development experience; or an Associate's degree with four (4) years of IT experience that includes two (2) years of software development; or a High school diploma or GED with six (6) years of IT experience, including two (2) years of software development.
Responsibilities
In this role, I will develop, maintain, and extend software components and features for various products. I will be tasked with writing well-designed, testable, and efficient software, and I may supervise or provide guidance to junior Software Scientists. My primary focus will be on supporting hydrologic model software development projects at the Alabama Water Institute. I will collaborate closely with the Assistant Director of DevOps and IT, along with a diverse team comprising DevOps Engineers, System/Site Reliability Engineers, Research Software Engineers, and hydrologic modelers. I aim to build, optimize, and maintain complex software applications using a range of programming techniques and technologies. Additionally, I will assist water researchers and engineers in the design, development, and maintenance of applications while contributing to code reviews and software testing. My work will also involve solving problems independently, utilizing creativity, and innovating within cutting-edge water research.

It is essential to note that the continuation of this position is contingent upon the availability of external funding sourced from research programs or specific projects. Candidates are also expected to have strong programming capabilities in languages like C, C++, Fortran, Python, or others typically used in HPC environments. A deep comprehension of parallel programming frameworks, proficiency in HPC tools, and a solid understanding of algorithms and data structures suitable for parallel processing are crucial aspects of the role. We believe in fostering a culture of continuous learning in technology, encouraging the ability to document code effectively, and supporting computational sciences, engineering, artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML), and other research fields in hydrology.
