Requirements
Must:
- Minimum of 3 years of supervisory or lead mechanic experience in a hotel or similar field, or a technical certificate with at least 1 year of supervisory or lead mechanic experience.
- Stationary engineers license as required by local regulations.
- Proficiency in HVAC, electrical systems, plumbing, boiler operations, and general maintenance.
- High school diploma or equivalent is essential.
- Ability to work extended hours as necessary.
- Physically capable of exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
- Maintain a warm and personable demeanor at all times.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills; ability to engage with all levels of personnel and guests in a friendly and service-oriented manner.
- Strong listening abilities to fully understand and address concerns raised by guests and staff.
- Ability to multitask and prioritize departmental functions to adhere to deadlines.
- Approach all interactions with guests and colleagues with courtesy and attentiveness.
- Attendance at all mandatory hotel meetings and training sessions is required.
- Participation in management on duty coverage as necessary.
- Consistent presence in alignment with Highgate Hotel standards as dictated by scheduling needs.
- High standards for personal appearance and grooming, including wearing name tags.
- Compliance with Highgate Hotel policies and regulations to promote safe and efficient operations.
- Proactive in identifying and resolving issues to enhance productivity.
- Capable of handling problems efficiently, including anticipating, preventing, identifying, and solving them as required.
- Ability to understand and analyze complex information from various sources to achieve objectives.
- Commitment to maintaining confidentiality of sensitive information.
- Willingness to perform additional duties as assigned by management.
- Possession of relevant fitness certifications such as Refrigeration Engineer, Fire Pump and Sprinkler system certifications, and Cooling Tower Treatment certificates.
Responsibilities
- Deliver unparalleled service to guests at all times.
- Address guest complaints and requests promptly and effectively.
- Maintain comprehensive knowledge of emergency protocols and safety measures.
- Respond to emergencies competently and be ready to assist.
- Oversee the procurement of supplies, tools, and equipment, ensuring compliance with corporate standards.
- Support and execute the departments back-of-house preventive maintenance strategy.
- Carry out additional tasks as assigned and take on the role of Building Manager as necessary while ensuring upkeep of the buildings interior and exterior.
- Act confidently on behalf of the Chief Engineer in their absence, interacting with ownership, corporate executives, contractors, and other department leaders.
- Develop and implement preventive maintenance programs for both back-of-house areas and mechanical equipment throughout the premises.
- Adhere to and thoroughly understand all safety protocols (e.g., LOTO).
- Perform routine maintenance evaluations and accurately log findings.
- Participate in Daily Operations Meetings.
- Supervise and train engineering staff in customer service, empowerment, standard operating procedures, and loss prevention.
- Ensure cleanliness and organization in all work areas, workshops, and storage spaces.
- Train and guide Building Managers on their daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly responsibilities.
- Conduct evaluations of Building Managers as needed and coordinate with HR.
- Maintain compliance with all necessary licensure as required by NYC, NY State, and other governing bodies relevant to the buildings operations.
- Direct staffing and performance evaluations, ensuring corrective actions are taken when necessary.
- Follow all established company policies, procedures, and regulations, including those detailed in the employee handbook.
- Navigate issues related to union matters effectively.
- Assist in formulating and executing maintenance strategies for property, equipment, grounds, and other assets to ensure safety and quality standards are upheld.
- Guarantee compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations applicable to the hotel.
- Ensure routine inspection, testing, and certification of all emergency and life safety equipment per Highgate Hotel standards.
- Actively engage in energy conservation initiatives.
- Respond immediately to all alarms to determine location and cause, assess emergency status, and inform the Front Desk, taking necessary actions.
- Support and engage with all Highgate Hotel initiatives.
- Lead and/or participate in the Highgate Hotel Safety Committee.
