Must:
We are seeking candidates who possess a four-year degree in Genetics, Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Computational Physics, or a related field. You should have at least five years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and experience. Ideal qualifications include expertise in biomedical data formats (FASTQ, FASTA, BAM, CRAM, Hail MatrixTable, etc.), proficiency in programming with Python, and familiarity with cloud computing, particularly Google Cloud. Experience with graph databases and big data technologies (such as BigQuery, Spark, Hail, Terra) is advantageous. You should have a solid understanding of data security issues, knowledge of FedRAMP cloud security, and be familiar with the FAIR principles of data management. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential, along with the ability to independently understand research project objectives and devise solutions utilizing a variety of technologies and methods. We value a desire for continuous learning and the ability to adapt to the fast-paced demands of research.
Responsibilities
In this role, you will lead the maintenance and optimization of our production Trellis system, which manages significant volumes of genomic data for the Million Veteran Program (MVP). You will collaborate with our Security Operations team to address any security incidents and construct queries to our graph database to derive insights from pipeline data. Duties also include implementing population-level genomic analyses (such as GWAS and PCA) to ensure data integrity, designing and integrating new bioinformatics pipelines into the Trellis system, and troubleshooting data flow within our state-driven architecture. You will build containers for bioinformatics tools and integrate them with our internal data management system to automate workflows. Engaging with researchers to explore solutions to relevant biological questions and maximizing the potential of our whole-genome sequencing data for public benefit will also be key components of your role.

The Stanford Center for Genomics and Personalized Medicine (SCGPM) offers an amazing opportunity for a dedicated Biomedical Cloud Engineer to develop creative data architectures aimed at automating the transformation of extensive genomic data into meaningful biomedical insights. Our team comprises about a dozen scientists, engineers, and software developers who work collaboratively, contributing their diverse expertise to manage and analyze complex biomedical data. Various other projects are supported by our team, including initiatives like the NCI Human Tumor Atlas Network and the Stanford Metabolic Health Center. The position offers flexibility, allowing for on-site work in Palo Alto, fully remote work, or a hybrid approach.
