Requirements
Must:
- Technical expertise in AI security, cybersecurity engineering, or related emerging technology fields.
- Proven success in leading large technical or research initiatives, including managing diverse teams and budgets.
- Experience in designing and executing complex projects from inception to completion.
- In-depth knowledge of AI threat models, system vulnerabilities, and cyber capability assessments.
- Strong ability to articulate complex technical concepts to senior stakeholders without technical backgrounds.
- Familiarity with U.S. cybersecurity policy frameworks and agencies.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication abilities.
Responsibilities
- Shape and advance RANDs research agenda on secure AI systems, setting priorities across various teams and initiatives.
- Direct intricate, cross-disciplinary projects that blend technical R&D, cybersecurity operations, and policy analysis.
- Mentor and supervise senior technical personnel, project managers, and researchers within a portfolio of 15-30 individuals.
- Transform technical discoveries into practical recommendations for policymakers, regulators, and industry leaders.
- Manage the creation of AI-specific threat models, security architectures, and tools for evaluating cyber risks and resilience.
- Collaborate directly with senior government and industry figures to ensure RANDs research influences top-level decisions.
- Represent RAND at various technical and policy forums, including national security working groups, agency briefings, and expert panels.
Description
We are looking for a technical and strategic leader to join RANDs Center on AI, Security, and Technology (CAST) as the Senior Research Lead for our AI Security Portfolio. This role is pivotal in conducting groundbreaking research on transformative technologies, including artificial intelligence, to enhance global security and promote the public interest. You will manage a sizable research and engineering portfolio focused on securing advanced AI systems and informing related policy frameworks. This position is offered as a three-year fixed-term appointment located in one of our offices in San Francisco, CA; Washington, DC; Santa Monica, CA; Pittsburgh, PA; or Boston, MA, with a hybrid work model available.
