Requirements

Must:
- Experience conducting research or analysis on AI, emerging technologies, or technology governance, including AI policy, AI infrastructure, or semiconductor ecosystems. - Demonstrated technical literacy in AI systems and computing infrastructure, including understanding of AI capabilities, limitations, and security-relevant risks (e.g., compute, models, data, or supply chains). - Proven ability to produce analytically rigorous research outputs, evidenced by policy reports, academic publications, technical memoranda, or similar professional work. - Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to articulate complex technical or scientific concepts and their policy implications to non-technical audiences. - Established capability to manage or significantly contribute to complex, multi-stakeholder research or projects. - Familiarity with U.S. government institutions or policy audiences regarding technology, science, or national security issues (preferred). - Basic understanding of software systems, data analysis, or technical research processes to collaborate effectively with engineers and technical researchers (preferred). - Background in ethics, law, or philosophy, or demonstrated capacity to critically engage with normative and governance questions related to emerging technologies (preferred). - Ability to operate independently in unclear research settings and produce high-quality outputs on tight deadlines (preferred). - Experience mentoring or leading researchers or project teams (preferred).

Responsibilities

- Lead or assist in AI security and policy research focused on securing AI systems, evaluating AI cyber capabilities, and exploring policy implications. - Conduct analysis of emerging AI security challenges, including threat models, system vulnerabilities, and priorities for security-oriented R&D. - Monitor and evaluate U.S. and international AI policy, legal, and governance developments pertinent to national and global security. - Present findings to both technical and non-technical stakeholders through policy briefs, presentations, and written research documents in various engagements. - Enhance CASTs strategic and operational effectiveness through collaboration and support to senior AI Policy staff. - Align CAST AI policy with relevant initiatives across biosecurity and other national security efforts.
