Requirements
Must:
- Over 10 years of experience in backend engineering, including high-scale distributed platforms
- Proficient in Python (FastAPI, Flask) or similar modern backend frameworks
- In-depth knowledge of designing event-driven architectures in AWS (EventBridge, SQS/SNS, Lambda, ECS)
- Experience in developing and managing asynchronous task processing systems (e.g., Celery or equivalent)
- Proven track record in defining and governing REST and/or GraphQL APIs at scale
- Strong grasp of service boundaries, microservices, and asynchronous service-to-service communication
- Expertise in creating highly observable systems (metrics, tracing, alerting — e.g., Datadog or similar tools)
- Background in implementing secure authentication and authorization (OAuth2, JWT, service-to-service security)
- Familiarity with Postgres, DynamoDB, and distributed caching solutions (e.g., Redis)
- Knowledge of Infrastructure as Code (Terraform/CDK) and mature CI/CD practices
- Experience with systems operating in regulated environments handling sensitive data (HIPAA, PHI/PII)
- Excellent technical communication skills and proven influence across teams
- Ability to navigate effectively in ambiguous situations and clarify objectives across teams
Responsibilities
- Lead the design and modernization of our patient-facing backend services
- Champion best practices in API design, including BFF and orchestration patterns
- Define and enforce API contracts and establish standards for cross-service communication
- Create and implement event-driven workflows using AWS EventBridge and asynchronous messaging
- Enhance reliability and fault tolerance of communication channels (email, SMS, notifications)
- Ensure consistent implementation of secure authentication and authorization across APIs
- Address technical debt and make impactful decisions to boost engineering efficiency
- Design secure, scalable systems that manage sensitive patient and identity information
- Mentor fellow engineers and elevate standards in system design
- Collaborate with Product, Architecture, Security, QA, Clinical, and Frontend teams
- Clearly communicate complex technical concepts to diverse stakeholders and leadership, influencing architectural trajectories and product strategies
- Advocate for enhancements in developer experience, testing practices, and system observability

We are seeking a Staff Engineer to become a key player in our Patient Platform team, which is dedicated to shaping the systems that enhance patient-facing experiences on our health technology platform. This team is responsible for the APIs, orchestration services, and communication infrastructure that facilitate secure and reliable interactions with our patients through email, SMS, and notifications. As we experience significant growth and modernize our legacy services, you will be integral in evolving our backend systems to scale effectively. We value candidates based in Vancouver, BC, who can work in a hybrid capacity, but we are also open to remote applicants from across Canada.
