Requirements

Must:
- A bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience is preferred. - A minimum of 1.5 years of traditional underwriting experience. - Strong analytical skills with the ability to make independent decisions and apply sound judgment in the application of rules. - Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to handle confidential information while exercising tact, diplomacy, and resourcefulness. - Proficient in computer skills and using various software packages. - Ability to work accurately while maintaining speed and flexibility in both team and independent production environments. - Highly organized, with the ability to establish priorities and meet deadlines. - Agility to manage multiple tasks and adapt to a changing work environment. - Only applicants with individual life underwriting experience will be considered for this role.

Responsibilities

- Build relationships with Financial Advisors and internal partners while successfully underwriting Life, Disability, and/or Long-term Care insurance policies. - Maintain effective communication with the field and customers, responding to case appeals and inquiries, and assisting with placing business. - Analyze and appraise a broad range of insurance applications, approving, classifying, or declining applications for various ages and policy amounts. - Review applications independently, adhering to underwriting standards and demonstrating an intermediate level of experience with Northwestern Mutual’s product types and changes. - Demonstrate continuous learning by adopting new underwriting methods and maintaining mortality and morbidity expectations. - Underwrite applications while providing active case and requirement management, delivering customized service with guidance. - Communicate and negotiate decisions with Field Partners to explain modified or declined offers and assist in policy placement. - Utilize effective means to gather necessary information, including digital health data, Internet searches, and direct contact with insured parties. - Collaborate with peer reviewers and medical and technical staff on cases as needed. - Address issues and escalations with guidance and partner with Underwriting Support for case management. - Participate in cross-functional leadership and improve product processes in collaboration with functional partners.
