Requirements

Must:
- An Associates degree (A.A.) or equivalent from an accredited two-year college or technical school in math, physics, science, or a related technical discipline - Preferably a bachelors degree in a related area with three or more years of experience operating large-scale astronomical telescopes - Ability to follow established procedures and policies - Calm demeanor under emergency situations - Clear verbal and written communication skills - Attention to detail and competency in working with others, including in high-stress scenarios - Proficient in computer operations, specifically process control software, word processing, and spreadsheet applications - Familiarity with LINUX/UNIX operating systems - Capable of interpreting technical documents such as schematics and procedure manuals - Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks effectively - Valid NM Drivers License is required - Authorization to work in the United States is mandatory

Responsibilities

- Operate and monitor telescopes along with supporting equipment - Engage in cross-training to manage the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) - Troubleshoot and apply corrective measures during technical faults - Communicate actively with personnel regarding array operations and safety alerts - Initiate control procedures for telescopes, including preparing necessary hardware and software for operation - Execute observational programs based on instructions from observers, including processing incoming files and confirming schedules - Provide support to observers and scientific staff for data analysis and telescope commands - Keep track of alerts and readings across multiple computer interfaces to detect unsafe conditions - Assess data quality through monitoring of fringe amplitude and flagging codes - Conduct system tests to calibrate antennas and verify functionality - Implement protective measures for telescope equipment - Make emergency personnel notifications as needed - Maintain an accurate log of operational failures and significant events - Write comprehensive maintenance reports for any hardware or software issues - Document and maintain operational procedures - Gather meteorological data for the National Weather Service - Drive shuttles between the VLA and the NRAO facility in Socorro - Ensure compliance with all NRAO policies - Additional tasks may be assigned as necessary
