Requirements
Must:
- Bachelors degree in computer science, engineering, scientific, or related field; relevant experience may substitute for a degree.
- Advanced degree in a related discipline is a plus (not mandatory).
- No prior work experience necessary; candidates with more experience may qualify for a higher-level position.
- Strong ability to communicate and collaborate with diverse stakeholders regarding ongoing software projects.
- Experience working with senior software engineers to create software architecture that satisfies stakeholder requirements.
- Familiarity with messaging frameworks like Kafka, Pulsar, RabbitMQ.
- Proficiency in at least one object-oriented programming language; Java or C++ preferred.
- Experience with Python.
- Eagerness to learn new programming languages suitable for specific tasks.
- Familiar with version control software, testing methodologies, and CI/CD practices.
- Knowledge of software engineering principles, Agile methodologies, and complete product lifecycle is advantageous.
Responsibilities
- Design and develop innovative software solutions for the Radar project utilized by the GBT, VLBA, and future ngVLA.
- Collaborate with senior software engineers and stakeholders to clarify system requirements.
- Construct systems and components that align with stakeholder needs through careful design.
- Conduct trade studies and build prototypes for testing and validation purposes.
- Document findings and create reports summarizing project outcomes.
- Explore messaging frameworks and benchmark data transfer between telescope sites.
- Develop backend prototypes to allow users to access shared data.
- Participate actively in early software implementations and testing for the Radar project, emphasizing system communication.
- Contribute to the maintenance and enhancements of existing software systems to support ongoing operations.
- Innovate new products to address emerging challenges in observational techniques to maintain our leading edge in science and technology.

At the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO), we are a prestigious research institution dedicated to advancing our understanding of the universe. Our team operates state-of-the-art radio telescopes globally, including the renowned Very Large Array (VLA) in New Mexico and the Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia. We are currently seeking a Software Engineer to develop new systems primarily for the Radar project in collaboration with the U.S. Naval Observatory. This role can be based in Albuquerque or Socorro, NM, with other potential locations including Charlottesville, VA, and Green Bank, WV, or even a remote arrangement after a year of service.
