Requirements
Must:
- Bachelors degree or higher in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent education and experience
- Minimum of three years of practical experience in Linux system administration within a scientific or engineering environment
- Proficiency in software development is advantageous
- Experience in architecting and managing resilient cluster systems
- Familiarity with monitoring and log aggregation tools such as Prometheus/Grafana or ELK/Graylog
- Skills in designing secure data center networks with VLAN segmentation and routing policies
- Capability to program enterprise switches for optimal HPC traffic
- Knowledge of security hardening practices using infrastructure-as-code
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills across hardware, OS, networks, and applications
- Must be able to lift data center equipment weighing up to 40 lbs
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and test the operating system and software components for the correlator computer cluster
- Create documentation for installation, configuration, and maintenance of the correlator cluster
- Develop and maintain software for VLBA telescope systems
- Write and regularly update critical software documentation including requirements, design specifications, and user guides
- Monitor system performance and utilize platforms to detect and resolve issues
- Collaborate with team members on software and hardware development initiatives

We are the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO), a renowned research institution dedicated to exploring the universe. Our facilities include the acclaimed Very Large Array (VLA) in New Mexico and the Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia, among others. We are currently seeking a full-time Software Engineer - HPC Systems Engineer to join our VLBA software development team located at our Science Operations Center in Socorro, NM. This role may also allow for telework arrangements for highly qualified candidates residing nearby.
