Requirements
Must:
- Bachelors degree in a relevant discipline
- Minimum of five years of experience in networking
- Service-oriented mindset to understand and meet end-user needs
- Strong collaboration skills with experience working in distributed and international teams
- Excellent verbal and written communication abilities
- Proven experience in modernizing large-scale network environments
Responsibilities
- Participate in training network support staff across various locations to encourage collaboration and knowledge sharing
- Design processes to enhance network performance, troubleshoot issues, and manage timely outage resolutions
- Monitor and evaluate the performance and resilience of communications operations to meet scientific and business requirements
- Collaborate with system architects to optimize networks and improve segmentation and access control
- Provide monthly reports on network operational status and utilization for stakeholder access
- Work alongside the Cybersecurity Officer to secure network systems through policy establishment and access monitoring
- Develop processes for upgrading network equipment to current stable firmware, including configuration of routing, switching, and firewall equipment
- Assess and recommend mitigation strategies for network-related risks
Description
The National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) is a renowned research facility dedicated to the exploration of the universe, operating advanced radio telescopes globally, including the Very Large Array in New Mexico and the Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia. We are on the lookout for a proactive Network Engineer to join our Network Services Team at our Charlottesville, Virginia headquarters. This role is integral to providing networks that support scientific operations across our diverse facilities, ensuring robust communication for major observatories, remote sites, and hybrid cloud systems.
