Requirements

Must:
- Bachelors degree in computer science or a related field, or equivalent education and experience - Advanced degree in computer science, engineering, computational science, or a related discipline preferred - Minimum of six years of experience as an infrastructure architect with a focus on designing large-scale distributed systems - Proven expertise in high-performance computing, large-scale scientific data processing, and distributed systems architecture - Strong interpersonal and communication skills to influence senior technical leaders without formal authority - Experience in federally funded or FFRDC environments is highly preferred - Solid understanding of HPC technologies, networking, storage, data center design, and capacity planning - Practical experience with cluster design, commissioning, operations, resource scheduling, and container orchestration - Familiarity with high-volume, multi-site data transport workflows and scalable archival and processing storage technologies

Responsibilities

- Provide strategic and architectural leadership for the technology ecosystem supporting our scientific endeavors - Collaborate with software and data architects to determine the long-term technical trajectory for research computing - Ensure mission systems are interoperable, scalable, and consistent with institutional strategy - Develop and maintain an architectural roadmap for IT infrastructure of research systems - Define reference architectures for scientific computing and data lifecycle management - Evaluate emerging technologies for relevance to mission-scale science - Serve as the integrative architect across high-performance computing environments, cloud and on-premises platforms, data archives, and networking systems - Conduct system-level design reviews for significant initiatives - Establish architectural standards and governance principles - Assess technical risks for new mission initiatives - Define sustainability models for research platforms - Promote reproducibility, scalability, and interoperability across various systems - Work collaboratively with Platform Engineering, Network Engineering, and Scientific Software Engineering teams - Translate scientific requirements into architectural directives - Act as a technical advisor to scientific and executive leadership - Anticipate and address challenges related to scaling for next-generation instruments and data rates - Balance innovative approaches with operational stability and cost-effectiveness - Maintain and upgrade existing software solutions to bolster operations - Develop new products to address emerging scientific challenges and support the observatorys mission
