Requirements

Must:
- Bachelors degree in Astronomy, Physics, or a related field - 1 to 5 years of relevant experience in scientific data handling - Proficient in reducing, plotting, and analyzing scientific data products - Observational experience with telescopes - Experience in software testing and debugging for user support or telescope operations - Strong written and verbal communication skills - Excellent interpersonal abilities - Strong analytical thinking - Quick learner of new systems - Willingness to assume increased responsibilities - Ability to manage self-directed assignments - Capable of effectively training or mentoring others - Proficient in using computers across M/S Windows, MacOS, and Linux operating systems - Basic understanding of astronomy; knowledge of radio or millimeter astronomy is a plus - Familiarity with Python or another programming language is advantageous - Experience with large datasets or machine learning techniques is preferable - Understanding of VLBI techniques is a plus

Responsibilities

- Provide support to observatory scientists and researchers - Offer on-call assistance for the Green Bank Telescope (GBT) and other site telescopes - Train GBO staff to enhance GBT observation capabilities - Conduct technical reviews of GBT observing proposals annually - Manage GBT observing documentation and processes - Assist in observing script preparation and post-observation data analysis - Act as a liaison for external proposals utilizing the GBT - Ensure compliance with GBO and governmental safety policies in the workplace - Engage in documentation efforts for observer-facing resources - Complete additional tasks as required

We are the Green Bank Observatory, dedicated to advanced scientific research and the operation of the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope, the largest fully steerable telescope globally. Our team is seeking a motivated Scientific Data Analyst to join us in Green Bank, West Virginia, where we offer a tranquil work environment surrounded by beautiful national forests. The successful candidate will engage in a vibrant academic atmosphere with opportunities for outdoor activities. This position initially consists of a two-year appointment, with potential for extension or conversion, depending on budget and mutual interest.
