Requirements
Must:
- Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering
- 7 years of experience with deployed thermal products or systems
- Background in the chiller industry or large industrial HVAC sector
- Proficiency in Microsoft 365/Excel, including basic macros/VBA for data analysis and reporting
- CAD expertise (SolidWorks, Creo, or equivalent)
- Competency in engineering calculations and documentation (MathCAD, EES, or equivalent)
- Knowledge of heat transfer analysis (conduction, convection, two-phase)
- Strong cross-domain understanding of thermal, controls, and electrical systems—valuing generalists with approximately 80% mastery across domains
- Experience in thermodynamic cycle analysis
- Understanding fluid mechanics and hydraulic system design
- Skills in thermal system component sizing and selection
- Hands-on experience with prototype fabrication and testing
- Ability to execute cross-functional projects
Responsibilities
- Plan and execute sophisticated thermal projects and product launches; deliver complete thermal system designs
- Integrate subsystems into holistic thermal solutions; facilitate coordination among cooling loops, controls, and heat rejection processes
- Establish specifications for complete thermal systems, encompassing multi-domain requirements (thermal, controls, electrical)
- Lead initiatives aimed at improving processes across thermal domains
- Potentially manage a team of 2-5 engineers and technicians on thermal system projects
- Communicate project status and strategic information across departments; provide mentorship to Engineer II and Senior Engineers

We are Johnson Controls, and our Data Center Product Architecture team is on the lookout for a Principal Data Center Thermal Systems Engineer to join our Advanced Technology & Innovation group. As a technical leader in thermal projects, you will have the opportunity to work independently, developing and coordinating innovative thermal system solutions. This role requires a minimum of three days onsite at our Advanced Technology and Innovation Center in New Freedom, PA. We are looking for individuals who are within commuting distance or are willing to relocate.
