Requirements
Must:
- Bachelors degree in healthcare administration, business, or a related field preferred
- At least three (3) years of progressive management experience in a Patient Access or Patient Registration Department within a hospital environment
- Familiarity with Medicare, Medi-Cal, and HMO/PPO billing protocols
- Understanding of Title 22, EMTALA registration, patient access processes, patient financial consent requirements, and hospital conditions of participation
- Strong organizational and leadership capabilities
- Excellent communication, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills
- Capacity to manage high-pressure scenarios calmly and professionally
- Ability to comprehend and interpret documents such as safety regulations, operating and maintenance guidelines, and procedure manuals
- Proficient in PC-based applications, with experience in medical information systems (Medi-tech preferred)
- Certification as a Healthcare Access Manager (CHAM) must be obtained within one year of hire
Responsibilities
- Direct daily operations of patient access functions within hospital and outpatient environments
- Supervise switchboard activities, ensuring prompt handling of incoming communications, including paging, operator-assisted calls, and emergency alerts
- Recruit, train, coach, and guide staff in patient access and switchboard teams to foster engagement and uphold service quality
- Oversee the accuracy of registrations, insurance verifications, and the quality of switchboard call management
- Ensure compliance with HIPAA, EMTALA, CMS Conditions of Participation, and relevant regulatory guidelines
- Promote a culture centered on service excellence, acting as a point of escalation for patient complaints or urgent communication matters
- Track and manage waiting times, call abandonment rates, and paging response intervals
- Develop, monitor, and oversee the operational budget for patient access and switchboard functions
- Assess financial performance and implement corrective measures as necessary
- Collaborate with IT and Facilities teams to sustain efficient switchboard, paging, and communication systems
