Requirements
Must:
- Over 5 years of experience in installation, configuration, operation, and maintenance of IT system hardware and software, along with related IT infrastructure.
- Proven knowledge and experience with Red Hat Linux, Apache, Tomcat, including familiarity with drivers, applications, vulnerabilities, security requirements, and quarterly STIG updates.
- Understanding of AWS solutions and the migration of Linux systems is advantageous.
- Familiarity with programming languages such as Java, Python, PHP, and Perl.
- Experience in setting up and maintaining system hardware, RAID configuration, operating systems, software systems, network systems, and security systems.
- Competence in applying OS patches and upgrades regularly, along with upgrades of administrative tools and utilities; configuring, adding, and removing services as necessary.
- Experience in automation to improve recurring system administration tasks is highly preferred, especially with scripting languages.
- Familiarity with AWS Lambda, containers, EC2 instances, and other cloud-native technologies is a plus.
- Ability to work independently and take initiative in identifying areas for enhancement and proposing solutions.
- Strong communication skills for effective interactions with coworkers and stakeholders.
- Must successfully pass a NOAA (Stennis Space Center)/NASA background check for site/system access.
- Must be able to acquire and maintain facility credentials/authorization.
- A valid ship is required for facility credentials/authorization at this location.
Responsibilities
- Maintain and manage all Linux-based servers and clients on-site and within an AWS cloud environment.
- Adhere to best practices in systems administration.
- Patch and configure systems in accordance with NOAA security protocols.
- Upgrade operating systems preceding end-of-support dates.
- Assist in diagnosing and resolving system issues.
- Support software development projects as needed.
- Deploy application updates for both commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) and internal applications.
- Plan and implement the migration of local systems to a cloud infrastructure cost-effectively where feasible.
- Oversee the health of physical servers and the integrity of storage; manage disk arrays using RAID controller BIOS and CLI utilities.
- Identify and address physical hardware faults, carrying out replacement of faulty server components as required.
- Ensure reliable backups of systems and data.
- Manage and maintain server certificates.
- Ensure maintenance of Red Hat Enterprise Linux subscriptions.
- Carry out ongoing performance tuning, hardware upgrades, and resource optimization as necessary.
- Participate in an on-call rotation to provide 24/7 support for critical IT data processing, applications, and functions to ensure continuity of NDBC operations.
- Facilitate improvements in IT architecture to support essential operations and data flow.
- Assist in annual NDBC IT Assessment and Authorization (A&A) audits through security patching and configurations; actively manage changes required by Plan of Action & Milestones (POAM) needs to maintain Authority to Operate (ATO).
- Communicate and brief stakeholders on upcoming maintenance activities and anticipated impacts.
- Implement strategies to automate routine administrative processes.
- Maintain and monitor equipment for the data centers environment.

This role involves working with servers that process data for a global network of buoys, managed by the National Data Buoy Center (NDBC). While some telecommuting is permitted, we do require regular presence in the office, especially in the event of issues that necessitate in-person resolution.
