Requirements
Must:
- High school diploma or GED, with additional training in communications equipment usage.
- Six months to one year of experience in dispatching, radio communication, customer service, or a related field.
- Preferred experience in emergency communications.
- Extensive knowledge of City streets, neighborhoods, and general layout.
- Proficient understanding of operating a two-way radio communications system and relevant FCC regulations.
- Must be able to decode auditory information from the public and emergency agencies, providing telephone support effectively.
- Ability to accurately communicate over radio channels.
- Skills in assessing situations and utilizing sound judgment.
- Competence in gathering information from distressed individuals for dispatch.
- Capability to speak clearly and courteously.
- Strong composure under pressure and during emergencies.
- Proficient in operating assigned equipment and typing at average speed.
- Capacity to make sound decisions aligned with departmental policies.
- Willingness to learn radio communication codes and departmental standards.
- Must obtain Division Criminal Information operator certification within a specified timeframe.
- Skillful in maintaining courteous and tactful interactions with the public.
- Ability to build and sustain effective working relationships.
- Typing speed of at least 35 words per minute is required.
- Availability to work rotating or permanent 12-hour shifts, including weekends and holidays, as this role requires 24/7 coverage.
- Must undergo assessments including interviews, job simulations, background checks, and testing for psychological and medical fitness.
- Required to obtain Telecommunicator Certification from the North Carolina Sheriffs Education and Training Standards Division.
Responsibilities
- Respond to emergency and non-emergency calls related to public safety.
- Input service requests into the computer-aided dispatch system.
- Utilize two-way radios to stay connected with law enforcement vehicles and units.
- Dispatch police services, animal protective services, and fire/rescue teams.
- Monitor the status and location of officers for their safety.
- Stay updated on National Weather Service alerts and traffic conditions.
- Assign personnel to respond to assistance requests.
- Keep continuous radio communication with various departments, including law enforcement and safety agencies.
- Manage alarm response calls from local businesses.
- Provide information on neighborhood layouts, businesses, and city infrastructure.
- Access data through terminal connections to criminal information resources.
- Maintain logs and records of communications and service requests.
- Oversee traffic surveillance through city camera systems.
- Supervise building security systems for City Hall and the Greenville Police Department.
- Process Crime Stoppers tips and maintain thorough documentation of daily activities.
- Perform additional duties as designated by supervisors.
