Telecommunicator - Dispatch and Support

- High school diploma or GED, with additional training in communications equipment usage. - Six months to one year of experience in dispatching, radio communication, customer service, or a related field. - Preferred experience in emergency communications. - Extensive knowledge of City streets, neighborhoods, and general layout. - Proficient understanding of operating a two-way radio communications system and relevant FCC regulations. - Must be able to decode auditory information from the public and emergency agencies, providing telephone support effectively. - Ability to accurately communicate over radio channels. - Skills in assessing situations and utilizing sound judgment. - Competence in gathering information from distressed individuals for dispatch. - Capability to speak clearly and courteously. - Strong composure under pressure and during emergencies. - Proficient in operating assigned equipment and typing at average speed. - Capacity to make sound decisions aligned with departmental policies. - Willingness to learn radio communication codes and departmental standards. - Must obtain Division Criminal Information operator certification within a specified timeframe. - Skillful in maintaining courteous and tactful interactions with the public. - Ability to build and sustain effective working relationships. - Typing speed of at least 35 words per minute is required. - Availability to work rotating or permanent 12-hour shifts, including weekends and holidays, as this role requires 24/7 coverage. - Must undergo assessments including interviews, job simulations, background checks, and testing for psychological and medical fitness. - Required to obtain Telecommunicator Certification from the North Carolina Sheriffs Education and Training Standards Division.
