Requirements
Must:
- Minimum of 5 years of proven IT development experience
- Proficient in developing, enhancing, and maintaining CO-OPS software applications while following change management protocols
- Experience collaborating with users to gather application requirements
- Knowledge of various programming languages, including Python, Java, Javascript, Fortran, C/C++, HTML, CSS, and shell scripting
- Familiarity with technologies like AWS (Elastic Beanstalk, S3), mapping APIs (Google Maps, Esri, Leaflet), and SQL
- Strong communication skills, both oral and written
- Ability to engage with senior management effectively
- Experience with MS Office Suite
- Ability to troubleshoot and support operational needs for data accuracy and availability
Responsibilities
- Provide scientific, oceanographic, engineering and GIS application programming, system design, and system maintenance support
- Develop new applications and enhance existing CO-OPS software applications while ensuring compliance with governance procedures
- Collaborate with users to understand and derive application requirements
- Port legacy systems to new operating environments and recommend application design improvements
- Troubleshoot issues to ensure data accuracy and availability
- Address application bugs and optimize software performance in cloud environments
- Engage in the software lifecycle processes, including requirement analysis, design, testing, implementation, documentation, maintenance, and training
- Maintain consistency across development, testing, and production environments, including ensuring proper configuration libraries for scientific programming

At Bering Straits Professional Services (BSPS), we are a part of the BSNC family, dedicated to leveraging technology for significant scientific and geospatial impact. We are currently looking for a qualified Java/AWS GIS Application Programmer for a contract role located in Silver Spring, MD. This position offers competitive compensation ranging from $80,000 to $100,000. Our hybrid work model requires you to be onsite Tuesday through Thursday each week. We focus on supporting a range of applications within our agency, contributing to real-time oceanographic and geospatial information systems.
